If you ask a good number of wedding planners where they’d actually send a couple chasing that Italian-lake dream without the multi-year waitlist and the price tag that comes with such a famous name, almost all of us would give the same answer: Lake Maggiore.

Lake Como gets all the attention, and understandably; it earned it. But Lake Maggiore is not the backup option for couples priced out of Como: it’s the option most couples simply have not been told about yet – and lucky you I’m here to share every secret to a perfect Italian-lake dream wedding!

Why not Lake Como?

The obvious choice isn’t always the right one.

Como’s fame comes with real costs – and you can probably thank George Clooney for that. The best venues book two to three years out and prices carry a premium for the name alone, not to mention you’re competing for your date with every other couple who pictured the exact same shoreline.

Lake Maggiore sits less than two hours away, shares the same alpine backdrop and the same blue waters and comes in noticeably lower for a level of elegance that holds up completely.

What’s more, there’s also a practical detail worth knowing: Lake Maggiore is 45 minutes from Milan Malpensa (MXP); for a wedding being planned from the other side of the ocean, that single fact easily solves most of the logistics headaches before they even start!

Where to actually get married

Four of the most beautiful places on the lake.

Stresa

Stresa has been the heart of Lake Maggiore for over a century. In the late 1800s it welcomed royals, poets and the Grand Tour crowd and that Belle Époque aesthetic lays intact in the numerous historic hotels along the lakefront. The most famous one is the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées, where Ernest Hemingway himself wrote part of A Farewell to Arms from a suite overlooking the islands. If you want your wedding to carry a little of that literary heritage, Stresa is the right backdrop for your special day.

The Borromean Islands

Just off Stresa sit three small islands;

• Isola Bella is breathtaking: a Baroque palace turned into a museum, filled with art and tapestries, all wrapped in terraced Italian gardens so precisely composed they look like the perfect postcard.
• Isola dei Pescatori is an actual fishing village – as the name suggests – made of cobblestone lanes. Here, a small municipal room set inside a former fishermen’s house holds about 15 people, the perfect place to be for an intimate gathering.
• Isola Madre is the largest and quietest of the three. Home to one of the oldest lush botanical gardens in Italy (paid entry), here peacocks, parrots and pheasants wander freely among rare plants, making it an unbeatable location for fairy portraits.

Getting between the islands – the three islands run on public ferries or private charters, both comfortable for a full wedding party. Crossings are short, roughly 10 minutes depending on the departure point.

Baveno

A smaller, sixteenth-century village near Stresa that, unlike some of the lake’s busier destinations, offers a more intimate and authentic Italian experience. Here, elegant waterfront villas, the Alps rising in the distance and the gentle rhythm of boats gliding across the crystal-clear waters create an atmosphere of absolute romance.

Castello di Angera

Dominating the landscape from its hilltop position, the medieval fortress offers sweeping panoramic views over the shimmering lake, distant Alps and picturesque villages, creating a setting that feels straight out of a fairy tale. For couples dreaming of a destination wedding with regal charm, the castle provides an atmosphere unlike any other on Lake Maggiore.

The best time of year to say “I do”

Thanks to its mild climate and stunning natural scenery, Lake Maggiore offers beautiful settings from early spring through late autumn, with each season bringing its own unique charm;

• Spring (April to June) is the season of blooms, when gardens are filled with colorful plants and flowers while temperatures are pleasantly warm without that summer heat. Though it’s also the rainiest stretch of the year, the surrounding mountains are still capped with snow, creating breathtaking contrasts against the sparkling blue lake. For many couples, spring offers the perfect balance of comfortable weather, vibrant landscapes, and fewer crowds – just remember to plan an indoor backup!
• Summer (July and August) is the most popular wedding season, especially for international visitors. What’s not to love! Long sunny days and warm evenings make this an ideal time for elegant outdoor lakeside ceremonies and boat arrivals.
• Autumn (September and October) is when summer crowds begin to fade, the weather remains pleasantly mild and the softer light during the day creates incredibly romantic photographs, while lakeside venues often feel more intimate.
• Although winter (November to March) is considered off-season for weddings it still holds a quiet elegance. Fewer tourists, festive holiday decorations and misty lake views create an intimate atmosphere that feels very romantic.

Beyond the ceremony: what a Lake Maggiore wedding weekend looks like

A wedding here doesn’t end when the ceremony does: the ceremony should be the centerpiece of a full weekend, not the entire trip. Thus, this is what I would recommend;

Welcome Dinner

The celebrations often begin with a Welcome Dinner, held the evening before the wedding. This relaxed gathering gives guests time to meet one another before the big day while enjoying authentic Italian cuisine in a lakeside restaurant or historic villa. It’s the perfect time to set the tone for the Big Day and allows everyone to settle into the slower pace of life on the lake.

Private Boat Tours

Couples often organize a group excursion the day before, of, or after the wedding, allowing their guests to admire the lake from a different perspective while visiting its most famous attractions, including the enchanting Borromean Islands mentioned before, creating an unforgettable experience.

Wine Tastings & Italian Food Experiences

Italy is well-known for its exceptional food and wine, and destination weddings are the perfect opportunity to share these traditions; wine tastings featuring regional wines, private cooking classes or even a casual aperitivo evening where guests can savor local cheeses, cured meats, and handmade pasta.

Farewell Brunch

After the wedding, guests are invited to a relaxed Farewell Brunch before everyone departs.
